    For Paginated Reports we need to share, we store them in a dedicated PPU workspace and use Power Automate to send out reports to external users, who don't have Power BI Licenses. So, it requires one PPU license which is $20/month.

    The best way I've found to help business users understand the difference between a dashboard and report is with an analogy: "Imagine you're driving your car, and you need to check how fast you're going, how much gas you have left, whether your tires are all properly inflated, and whether the temperature and pressure of both your coolant and oil are within the normal operating ranges, and you have to do all of that in less than 5 seconds, because you can't take your eyes off the road for any longer than that. You have two tools you can use for this task: The first option is the car's built-in dashboard right in front of you. It's non-interactive, so you can't slice and dice, drill-down, etc. But all of your car's Key Performance Indicators are right there, exactly where you need them. The second option is a laptop on the seat next to you, which is plugged into the OBD-II port under your steering wheel, and it can give you the exact readings of every sensor in the entire vehicle over time. It has endless tables full of sensor IDs and diagnostic codes, each of which has its own lookup table, and there are interactive filters that you can use to display only the data collected during certain ranges of time, or from specific sensors. Now, which of these two tools will you use when you need to check your car's Key Performance Indicators while driving down the road?"

    Quick Question - I have a PowerBI dev space and prod space with a deployment pipeline. However, I have a few bookmarks that are in dev space, that don't show up in the prod side even after deployment. There's no difference showing up when I compare the semantic model and the report between the dev and prod workspaces. Any insight into this quirk? Do bookmarks not get migrated/deployed through the deployment pipeline from the dev to the prod workspace?

    Why don't you guys just use the Microsoft Store version of Power BI Desktop? If there is a bug, it will be fixed and updated faster than the manual version.

    I agree on the power of themes for this Atomic model. I've created a custom JSON theme template that format's all of my most standard visuals in a standard way. It's two clicks to upload this to each PBIX and after it's updated every visual I create are already standardized. I think that the on-object editing helps with the visual pattern piece as you should be able to swap fields in your current model with the broken field. I am pretty sure this is a feature but you have to be in on-object editing. It works pretty slick that way

    I like Tommy's point about the "forgotten middle child" and I think that's an insightful add. The 30 seconds part about helping people to direct where they should focus their attention -is- in a lot of ways the hardest part of the design and UX build process.

    FYI It looks like Microsoft has removed delta_column_mapping_mode from to_lakehouse_table. Had to use write instead and the table is showing up in my sql endpoint and semantic model.

    • @PowerBITips

      I don't think so based on this documentation it is an optional, learn.microsoft.com/python/api/semantic-link-sempy/sempy.fabric.fabricdataframe?view=semantic-link-python&WT.mc_id=DP-MVP-5002621#sempy-fabric-fabricdataframe-to-lakehouse-table the default setting is set to "name" which is using column mapping, if you don't want column mapping you must set this to "none" by setting it to none then you would be able to see the table inside the SQL Analytics endpoint.

    I think the 10000 hours reference from Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" refers to mastery and not to becoming an expert; and it refers to art, or at least this was the basis of the "The role of deliberate practice in the acquisition of expert performance" study. In IT the definition of an expert is probably more relaxed than in the arts. There's also a quote from Bruce Lee, which depicts what it takes to become a master in martial arts: "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."

    Hello Mike, This video is completely awesome, Can you please explain how to embed using pro license. As you did with service principle?

    • @PowerBITips
      @PowerBITips Місяць тому

      a Pro license only allows for a limited number of embeds, while you can embed reports from a pro workspace, this is not a sustainable solution. A premium capacity is required to embed reports into applications, either a P, A, EM or F sku is required to have embedding work. There are also license considerations, a P sku can be used for internal and external embedding, an A sku is for ISV of external only, an EM sku is for internal embedding and an F sku is for both internal and external embedding. my recommendation to customers is only use the F sku as it has the most flexibility in cost and embeds for both internal and external users.

    Why do I need to pay for a SQL Server instance to be running 24/7 when I only need it to run for an hour every day to feed Analysis Services? My company faced this exact situation. So we switched to SQL Serverless which turns off after a period of inactivity and saved $40k a year.

    Great content 👍One thing that we are looking into is using Git to deploy a change to multiple workspaces. We have a workspace for each customer and the workspaces only differ in the database connection (Azure SQL mirrored database). So same data model, same reports but with different data for each workspace. Do you know if this Git mechanism capable for that. In my mind the different workspaces would all point same source branch and the same folder. Only the data connection would be somehow parameterized.

  • @thghtfl
    @thghtfl 3 місяці тому

    The solution is absolutely not scalable, and it actually should be in the first place. Those tests with hardcoded values will become meaningless as soon as the report is run in production environment, which is supposed to contain completely different data. Everything that has been shown here contradicts the CI/CD principles, I don't know why you even brought up that term.
